UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer tells the Financial Times he will have a “constructive” relationship with incoming US President Donald Trump. In an interview with the paper, he dismisses Elon Musk’s criticisms of his leadership as “noises off”, and says what matters to him is his relationship with the US and Trump. The US president-elect’s inauguration is on Monday.
Many of Saturday’s papers pay tribute to Manchester United “great”, Denis Law, who has died aged 84. “Farewell to the lawman”, reads the Daily Mirror’s splash, calling him by his nickname. The former Scottish footballer’s family said he was “now at peace” after he was diagnosed with dementia in 2021.
The Times claims there has been a “huge rise” in the amount of millionaires leaving the UK following the government’s planned “crackdown” on non-domiciled residents. From April, non-doms’ overseas assets will also be subject to UK inheritance tax. According to global analytics firm New World Wealth, Britain lost a net 10,800 millionaires in 2024 – a 157% increase on the year before.
“Don’t you dare target triple lock again!” reads the Daily Express headline, referring to concerns over the future of state pensions. The paper claims Starmer and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch have been told “they will never be forgiven” if they “mess” with it. It quotes a pension activist on the front page.
The Daily Telegraph says Trump’s team has asked the UK to delay its decision on returning the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius until he is sworn in and can “rule” on it. The paper understands a call about the islands has “bolstered concern” that Trump will block the deal over security concerns on China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. The paper also looks at the government’s plans to repeal the Legacy Act, which could see Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams – among others – claim compensation over their unlawful detention in Northern Ireland in the 1970s.
The Sun leads with their exclusive, which has seen Jake Fahri, the murderer of schoolboy Jimmy Mizen, recalled to prison. The paper claims Fahri is masked drill rapper TEN, and that he boasted about his crime in his music. The 35-year-old was released on licence in 2023 following a 14-year term. Jimmy’s mother, Margaret Mizen, has called him “heartless” after he showed no remorse.
An exclusive from the i paper calls train drivers “demand” for a pay rise higher than the 4.5% offered to them last year, a “new headache” for the government. In an interview with the paper, Aslef union leader Mick Whelan says Labour’s rail reforms will come at a cost as he defends the average train driver salary of £59,000. “I don’t want to appear antagonistic” or start talks as if we’re “threatening”, he tells them.
The Daily Mail splashes with its exclusive on the “long-lost secret” diaries of British aristocrat Unity Mitford, Adolf Hitler’s “English girlfriend”. The paper says her journal provides an insight into one of history’s “most evil” men, who she described as “simply wonderful”. The Mail adds that she called the Nazi leader “so sweet” and “very funny”. The paper says it commissioned experts to look at the diaries’ handwriting, ink and paper to prove its authenticity.
“Make Hollywood great again!” the Daily Star exclaims. It claims Trump’s “No1 priority” as president will be to to give Rocky Balboa – Sylvester Stallone’s longstanding boxing character – the “mega-important” task of restoring Hollywood to its “golden age”.
