Minnesota Golden Gophers starting quarterback Drake Lindsey was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning in his hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The 20-year-old was taken into custody after police were alerted to a potential fraudulent identification document being used at a local bar shortly after midnight.
According to a preliminary report, via ESPN, Lindsey admitted to being in possession of a fake ID and consuming alcohol prior to his arrival at the establishment.
Officers reportedly discovered a copy of the fraudulent document inside the player’s wallet before transporting him to the Washington County Detention Center.
Lindsey was released roughly seven hours later after posting a $470 bond, with court hearings now scheduled for June 1 and June 29 in Fayetteville District Court.
The university has since acknowledged the incident, with a Minnesota spokesperson telling ESPN: ‘We are aware of the situation and will address it internally.’

The arrest comes as a major blow to the program following Lindsey’s record-breaking freshman season, where he secured eight wins – the most ever by a first-year Gophers QB.
Last fall, the 6-foot-5 standout threw for 2,382 yards and 18 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents in the Big Ten.
Expectations remain high for the sophomore, who was recently ranked as a top prospect on early big boards for the 2027 NFL Draft.
The Gophers are currently slated to open their 2026 campaign on September 3 against Eastern Illinois. Lindsey’s status for the opener now remains uncertain.
