Gain hands-on experience in photonic device design and simulation

Digital Catapult, in partnership with the Smart Nano NI consortium, has opened applications for the Smart Nano Industrial Photonics Bootcamp. The programme will run in early June 2026.

The bootcamp aims to help businesses build practical skills in photonics – a key technology used in communications, sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technologies and life sciences.

What the programme offers

The bootcamp will run for up to five days and include seminars, training and optional site visits. Participants will

  • learn to design and test photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits
  • use industry-standard tools
  • develop skills in modelling, simulation and physical validation
  • access Smart Nano Lab facilities to explore early-stage prototyping
  • learn from industry partners, including Seagate, Yelo and Causeway Sensors
  • connect with the Northern Ireland photonics and innovation ecosystem

Who should apply

The programme is open to UK-registered organisations working in, or exploring, photonics. It is particularly relevant for

  • SMEs, startups and scaleups developing photonic or sensing products
  • electronics manufacturers and systems integrators incorporating optical components
  • semiconductor and IC developers moving into photonics
  • engineers, technicians and R&D teams building capability in this area

It may also suit businesses in related sectors such as AI hardware, IoT, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing.

The deadline for applications is 1259pm on 18 May 2026.

Find out more and apply through the Digital Catapult website.

Before applying, review the programme terms and eligibility criteria. Places are limited and selection will be competitive.
