A sinkhole that opened up on a popular golf course left groundkeepers shocked at an unexpected discovery inside.
On Monday (2 March), the ground gave way at the 13th hole at the Davyhulme Park Golf Club in Greater Manchester. As the team worked to repair the hole, they found a wine cellar, which is believed to date back to the 19th century.
Dozens of empty bottles lay amongst bricks and rubble in the abandoned tunnel.
“Over 100 years old and filled with historic wine and port bottles — what an incredible piece of our club’s history!,” the club wrote online. It said that the area will remain temporarily closed as staff work to secure the ground.
