Lessons in Lifestyle

Simone Biles recently underwent an undisclosed procedure weeks after revealing she nearly died.

Last month, the Olympic gold medal gymnast, 29, revealed a health issue, calling it the “scariest experience of my life.” Sharing a photo on her Instagram Story of multiple hospital bracelets on her wrist, she wrote, “I’ve been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later.”

While Biles still has yet to share what landed her in the hospital, she has since publicly alluded to the incident, telling one Instagram fan in late June that she was “not ready to talk about it just yet.”

In a new health update shared Thursday on her Instagram Story, the athlete posted a black-and-white selfie from a hospital room.

Wearing a shower cap on her head, Biles sat smiling with her husband, Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens, 31, in the background.

“His birthday but he takes me to get my procedure,” she wrote next to a string of white hearts and a face holding back tears emoji. “I woke up singing bosman dlow, ‘Talk My S***.”

Biles did not share any details about the procedure, nor whether it was connected to her recent health scare.

The Independent has contacted Biles’s representative for comment.

Weeks after her medical emergency, Biles shared photos from her vacation in Belize.

“Relaxing in paradise,” she captioned a series of poolside snaps. She faced criticism for the post, with one person sarcastically commenting, “Almost died but look at these traveling selfies…,” alongside three laughing emojis.

“Ugh these comments make me sad,” Biles directly replied to the message, “A little over two weeks ago, I experienced a serious medical emergency that could have ended very differently, and this trip has been part of allowing myself to heal & appreciate being here.

“I hope you understand that life changing experiences can shift your perspective,” she said, adding that she hoped it allowed the commenter “to extend a little more grace to others moving forward.”

Biles has won a total of seven Olympic gold medals throughout her career. She earned her first four during her Olympic debut at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2020, she competed in some events at the Tokyo Games before withdrawing from the final five events to focus on her mental health. She later made her triumphant return at the 2024 Paris Games, winning three more gold medals. She has not yet announced her plans for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
