Footy fans have erupted after a frightening mid-air collision involving Aaron Naughton left the Western Bulldogs forward sprawled on the turf and sparked fresh debate over player safety in aerial contests.

The incident unfolded during the Bulldogs’ heavy loss to the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium, when Naughton launched into the air in a spectacular marking attempt that had all the hallmarks of a Mark of the Year contender.

But the moment quickly turned sickening.

As Naughton flew for the ball, contact from an opposition player in the contest saw him lose balance mid-air before crashing head-first into the ground. Play was halted almost immediately as players from both sides looked on in concern.

Naughton appeared dazed following the fall and was attended to by medical staff before being stretchered from the field and taken down to the rooms for further assessment.

While initial fears were serious, the Bulldogs later confirmed the 26-year-old had avoided concussion, with coach Luke Beveridge indicating the key forward had likely suffered a neck strain and would undergo scans.

Despite the positive medical update, the incident has ignited a fierce backlash online, with fans questioning whether the contest should have resulted in a free kick and whether the AFL needs to crack down harder on dangerous aerial contact.

Many pointed to what they believed was a lack of genuine attempt at the ball from the opposing player, raising concerns about so-called ‘tunnelling’, a tactic where a player subtly nudges an opponent under the ball, leaving them vulnerable mid-air.

‘@AFL can you look into this kind of reckless defending,’ one fan posted.

Another called for severe punishment, writing: ‘He needs to be suspended for the rest of the season for that.’

The outrage only escalated as more viewers weighed in on the vision.

‘How is that not a free kick? Deserves to go to jail let alone be reported,’ one comment read.

Others were more direct in their assessment of the contest itself.

‘Who was the Swan tunneling him there? There was no attempt at contest in that, that shit needs to be a suspension before someone breaks their neck.’

‘How was that not a mark or free kick for tunnelling or front on contact?’

There will be no reprieve for the wounded Bulldogs ahead of their clash with Fremantle next Friday.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge revealed star defender Rory Lobb will miss up to a month with a hamstring injury.

‘He got through a bit of training, felt OK, and he felt it in another spot, a bit lower down,’ Beveridge said,.

‘We scanned it again, and something showed up as a bit risky.

‘The initial signs were that he got a knock, bit of bleeding, but then in another spot, he had some discomfort, so he’ll be out for a good month.’

Lobb joins ruckman Tim English, star forward Sam Darcy and his fellow defender James O’Donnell.

Beveridge has ruled English (knee) out of returning to face the Dockers.

The Bulldogs will also be cautious with veteran midfielder Tom Liberatore, who is in the concussion protocols after a knock against Geelong.

After starting the season 4-0, including a stirring first-up win over reigning premiers Brisbane at the Gabba, the Bulldogs’ campaign has dramatically altered course with three-straight heavy defeats.

‘My message to the players was just we’re here to support you,’ Beveridge said.

‘We’re here to look for the next best version of ourselves, and whether that’s next week or in six weeks’ time.

‘But we’ve just got to deal with the injury toll.

‘We’ve just got to encourage and help the boys believe that they’re good enough to be in a winning Western Bulldogs team.’
