Sabrina Carpenter’s response to a fan interrupting her first-ever Coachella set has sparked debate on social media.

During the first night of the annual music festival, Carpenter was distracted by a noise in the crowd and took the time to address it mid-set.

“I think I heard someone yodeling,” the “Espresso” singer said in a video uploaded to X that has since gone viral. As the crowd laughed, the noise was again heard, prompting Carpenter to continue probing, “Is that what you’re doing?”

An audience member could be heard responding, “It’s Arab! It’s an Arab call.”

“I don’t like it,” Carpenter responded.

“It’s my culture!” the fan can be heard yelling.

Carpenter responded: “That’s your culture is yodeling?” While sitting at the piano straining to hear the fan’s continued explanation — heard in the video as, “It’s a call! A call of celebration!” — Carpenter appeared confused.

“Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird,” Carpenter concluded, referring to the annual music and arts festival, before continuing on with her Coachella set.

The Independent has contacted Carpenter’s representatives for comment.

Video of the interaction has spread across social media, igniting a heated debate over how Carpenter handled the moment. Some fans have called for her cancelation, arguing that “mocking” the yodeling after being provided with an explanation is “so nasty.”

“Being uncultured and proud is actually a disease. the mean girl act isn’t cute anymore,” the fan continued on X.

“The way Sabrina doubled down and decided to continue to be ignorant even after it was clarified yodeling is part of that person’s culture says a lot about her,” another argued.

“Did Sabrina Carpenter just call that girl’s culture weird and creepy?” someone else questioned while another wondered, “why would she even say this like.. just unnecessary and rude.”

“She was being so nasty and condescending with her facial expressions which made it even worse while she was insulting that person and their culture,” another viewer chimed in.

“I think she genuinely wasn’t coming from a bad place but when someone says ‘that’s my culture’ put ur PR training to use and DONT DOUBLE DOWN. I didn’t know that culture either but I wouldn’t double down if someone said that was their culture,” someone else said.

Others felt Carpenter wasn’t in the wrong and were quick to defend her.

“Sabrina will never be canceled. She didn’t do anything wrong. Why is that person even yodeling during someone’s live set?!?” one fan argued on X while another agreed, “She clearly could not hear the girl speaking. You have to remember she’s all the way up on stage. We can hear the audience much better. She just heard some girl yodeling and yelling about how it’s her culture like it’s not that serious.”

“She’s a popstar not a f***ing anthropologist , leave sabrina carpenter alone,” someone else wrote.

Carpenter went on to continue her headlining set, which included cinematic cameos from Will Ferrell, Susan Sarandon, and Sam Elliott.
