Actor Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance as his iconic character Deadpool at San Diego Comic Con, as he asked Robert Downey Jr for a role in the new Avengers: Doomsday.
In character and sporting a darker Deadpool suit, the 49-year-old emerged from the crowd, asking for a role in the upcoming Marvel film.
He was swiftly informed by Robert Downey Jr, who stars as Doctor Doom, that it had already been filmed.
Reynolds quipped: “This seems an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming?”
Downey Jr, surrounded by the rest of the cast on stage, retorted: “It’s in the can bro, look around you, did you bump your head?”
Reynolds pressed further: “I see, so there’s no additional photography, overages, hot costs, maybe last-minute additions? Happy Hogan, fetch the Audi we’re leaving.”
The actor then dropped the microphone and left the San Diego venue’s Hall H.
Despite Deadpool not being listed to appear in the upcoming film, there have been a number of rumours that Reynolds’ character will have a role.
Marvel fans got a better look at the forthcoming superhero film when an extended trailer premiered at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday (25 July), following the release of an “underwhelming” first clip last week.

The directors and cast took over the venue, including Doctor Doom star Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans who is reprising his role as Captain America after a seven-year absence.
All eyes, however, were on the new footage, which begins with Downey Jr’s Von Doom sitting on a throne as voiceover from Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm explains: “Victor was always the smartest guy in the room. He used to be different.
“He used to be kind. He used to be caring… Everything he loved was taken from him. I knew he was lost, and I did not realise that he was broken.”
As reported by Variety, the trailer leans into the film’s massive crossover appeal with fleeting scenes of characters across the MCU: Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Cyclops (James Marsden), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Gambit (Channing Tatum) and more.
Following a shot of New York City reduced to rubble, Mr Fantastic questions whether Doom is responsible. The trailer then cuts to Doom’s chilling line: “All of you have lived stolen lives. You refuse to give them back,” offering viewers a taste of Downey Jr’s Eastern European accent in the role.
Fans also got a glimpse of Doom’s army of Sentinel robots, the androids from the X-Men movies, which he unleashes upon Thor in the trailer.
The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was released on Monday showing Downey Jr, who played Iron Man in 10 previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, as Doctor Doom.
The film is a sequel to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and is the 39th movie in the MCU.
Marvel’s synopsis for the film reads: “Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.
“Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.
“This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on 18 December.
