Good recruitment is Ruben Amorim’s the secret to success at Manchester United, according to Red Devils legend Ryan Giggs.

The former Wales boss, who was part of the coaching staff at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, admitted that signings – even during his time at the club – have ‘not been good enough’ in the last decade.

But Giggs remains optimistic about Amorim’s prospects at Old Trafford and believes the Portuguese needs time, the support of the United board and assistance identifying the right players for the club to succeed.

‘The recruitment in the last, and I was part of it, the last 10-12 years has just been not good enough,’ said Giggs, who was appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, presented by Qatar Airways , which goes live at 6am on Friday 25th April.

‘Any business, any football team need that recruitment. You need a bit of luck. You need young, you know, we had young players coming through. So you had a group of young players together with the best players in Britain, you know, the [Eric] Cantona’s coming in, [Andrei] Kanchelskis, [Peter] Schmeichel.

‘So you need a bit of luck that you have them young players coming through. Recruitment. Time. I like the manager, I like Amorim.

‘I think he’s charismatic, he needs time, he needs a few transfer windows, he needs backing, but also he needs help on what is a United player and what a United player looks like.’

United are expected to be busy in the upcoming summer window with several names slated to depart, including the likes of Jadon Sancho, Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford.

The club are reported to be prioritising a striker in the window. In recent weeks, Wolves star Matheus Cunha has emerged as a likely recruit. Mail Sport revealed on Monday that Man United are edging closer to an agreement with the Brazilian.

United will still need to activate the Brazilian’s £62.5million release clause but are hopeful of having terms in place by next month while they still have headroom under Profit and Sustainability Rules.

As Mail Sport revealed, Newcastle United have been the main competition for Cunha’s signature, and they were keen to utilise him on the left of their attack, but the 25-year old looks to have been swayed by the prospect of playing a pivotal role in Amorim’s squad revamp.

Giggs’ backing comes amid United’s dismal campaign that has seen the side slump to 14th in the Premier League after their 15th league of the season against Wolves on Sunday.

United are confirmed to record their lowest Premier League points tally and are on course to finish in their lowest position. However, the Europa League provides hope of salvaging success from the term.

United progressed to the semi-final of the competition after an incredible 5-4 second leg comeback win Lyon last Thursday and will face LaLiga outfit Athletic Bilbao.
