Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim could be in line for a return to football after emerging as a candidate to take over at AC Milan.

Amorim has been out of work since being sacked by United in January but Daily Mail Sport understands he is in contention for the role at the Italian giants.

AC Milan are looking for a new head coach after firing Massimiliano Allegri following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Amorim is among the candidates to succeed Allegri and Gazzetta dello Sport has reported the 41-year-old has held talks with club chiefs.

Ex-Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Al Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle are among the others in the mix for the position.

Glasner and Jaissle have also been in talks with AC Milan bosses but are yet to strike a deal.

Ruben Amorim has emerged as a candidate for the head coach role at AC Milan

According to Gazzetta, Milan consider Amorim a good fit to become their head coach because his teams are aggressive and look to win the ball back immediately. The Portuguese was also among the candidates before AC Milan appointed Paolo Fonseca in June 2024.

Ralf Rangnick, another ex-Man United boss, was reportedly interviewed for the director of football job at AC Milan.

Amorim was axed by United in January after 14 months in charge, hours after an explosive press conference following the 1-1 draw with Leeds where he openly criticised director of football Jason Wilcox. It later emerged relations between the two had broken down.

He left Old Trafford having struggled throughout his tenure as head coach, finishing 15th in his first season and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

Amorim has kept a low profile since being sacked and has not yet spoken on his time at the club. He is thought to have earned a £10million pay-off as a result of being dismissed.

A filing to the New York Stock Exchange then revealed removing Amorim and his coaches could eventually cost up to £15.9m.

The figure stated in the submission is a maximum number, with the exact amount to be determined by factors including whether Amorim lands another job within a certain timeframe.

Amorim’s compensation package took the total cost of hiring and firing him to nearly £27m.

He was replaced by Michael Carrick, who was appointed until the end of the season before being given a two-year contract by the club after guiding United to a third-place finish and Champions League football.
