Erling Haaland’s dad has reignited his 30-year feud with former Manchester United captain Roy Keane following England’s defeat of Norway.

The Manchester City forward was followed by his former footballer father throughout the World Cup, and Alf Inge, who played for the likes of Manchester City and Leeds in the Premier League during his career, made his thoughts known during and after the game.

Haaland Sr took to X to congratulate ‘Bellingham and the referee’ and claimed Norway were ‘robbed’ by French referee Clement Turpin, who denied Norway a second goal after a VAR review in which Haaland Jr was adjudged to have fouled Elliot Anderson.

Keane then sensationally suggested on Stick to Football that alcohol could have impacted his rival’s judgement of proceedings, ‘because he always seems to be drinking alcohol at the matches’.

He added: ‘If you’re having a drink then you’re seeing the game differently’.

The jibe brought his rivalry with Haaland Sr to the surface, which started back in 1997 when Keane tore his ACL trying to tackle his opponent. Haaland Sr, playing for United’s rivals City at the time, stood over Keane and appeared to suggest he had been faking injury.

Four years later, the two clashed again, with Keane issuing a knee-high challenge on Haaland, receiving a red card.

And they are still going at it today. Keane’s quote was widely shared on social media, and Haaland took to one post to comment: ‘Once a p***k always a p***k’.

Keane had insisted he was giving a fair assessment of the referee’s performance, pointing to an anti-England bias he jokingly claimed to hold.

‘Listen, I’ll always be trying to go the other way (against England) a little bit, if it’s 50-50, but the push is a push and then he heads it, so there you go,’ he continued. ‘Families and fans after games, we saw the interviews with the England manager, Bellingham, family members, they’re all a bit emotional so you try and give them the benefit of the doubt.

‘But when people wake up tomorrow morning, you won’t be sitting there going, “The referee’s cost us”. You can’t. You can argue a couple of decisions but you can’t say, “He’s cost us”. No.’

Gary Neville, meanwhile, echoed Keane’s view.

‘No, I didn’t think it was a game where, as an England fan, that I thought we were lucky because of the referee,’ he said. ‘I thought against Ghana we were lucky, when Ezri Konsa’s penalty wasn’t given, and that’s when you are lucky, when you think you’ve got away with one.’

Ian Wright, meanwhile, added: ‘Is that sour grapes from Alf Inge Haaland, saying well done to Bellingham and the referee? I think that was just a bit of a low blow from him.’

Alf Inge has since deleted the comment on the post.
