Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to launch a new podcast, which he claims will usher in “a new era of radical transparency in government,” according to a teaser video first obtained by The Associated Press.
The show, titled “The Secretary Kennedy Podcast,” is scheduled to debut next week. It will feature Kennedy, a prominent anti-vaccine advocate who has significantly influenced the nation’s health policy, in discussions with doctors, scientists, and agency personnel, as confirmed by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials to the AP.
The teaser video, set in a polished HHS-branded studio with dramatic background music, portrays Kennedy presenting the podcast as a novel platform to expose corruption and falsehoods that have adversely affected American health.
“We’re going to name the names of the forces that obstruct the paths to public health,” Kennedy states in the nearly 90-second clip.
Kennedy’s appointment to the Trump administration last year provided him with an amplified platform for his perspectives, some of which diverge from the broad scientific consensus.
This new podcast could further elevate these ideas. Administration officials, however, assert that the initiative will help disseminate a crucial message about chronic disease and health improvement to a broader audience.
“This is part of our larger strategy to bring the Make America Healthy Again message to as wide an audience as we can,” said Liam Nahill, HHS digital director.
This new communication endeavor from HHS emerges amidst a series of recent challenges for the department.
These include widespread criticism regarding its vaccine policy adjustments, a federal court ruling last month that blocked several of these changes, and opposition from key Republican senators that has stalled President Donald Trump’s surgeon general nominee.
Consequently, the podcast could be perceived as part of a wider rebranding effort, as the agency shifts its focus from vaccine-related initiatives towards a less contentious agenda centered on healthy food, ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The show, which has been in development since the early days of the second Trump administration, also signifies Kennedy’s return to a familiar format.
Prior to assuming office, he hosted his own podcast and has frequently appeared on numerous others to share his views in long-form interviews, including as recently as this week.
Tyler Burger, HHS digital communications manager and the producer of the new podcast, noted that while Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary also hosts a podcast, officials believe Kennedy’s will be the first to be hosted by a sitting cabinet secretary.
“We’re kind of bringing podcasting into the government as an official form and arm of our messaging,” Burger explained, adding that the set for the show was largely assembled using existing agency resources and can accommodate up to four people for conversations.
Given that podcasts are now commonly produced in both audio and video formats, they are frequently clipped and shared across social media platforms, granting them “massive” reach, according to Melina Much, a postdoctoral fellow at New York University’s Center for Social Media and Politics.
Much also highlighted that podcasts tend to be more intimate, conversational, and informal than traditional interviews, enabling administration officials to promote their messages with potentially less scrutiny.
While Kennedy’s teaser emphasizes uncovering falsehoods, HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon stated that the podcast will aim to address affordability and other issues that polls indicate are significant to American voters across both parties in the lead-up to the midterms.
“Americans are united on the need to urgently address chronic disease, improve nutrition, strengthen food quality, and lower health costs,” he said. “The Secretary Kennedy Podcast will cover all those issues.”
