Lachie Neale has endured one of the most turbulent periods of his personal life, but the astonishing twist is that the drama surrounding his marriage breakdown appears to have fuelled some of the best football of his decorated AFL career.

While speculation continues over Neale’s future with the Brisbane Lions following his split from wife Jules, the dual Brownlow Medallist is producing numbers that place him among the competition’s elite once again.

Far from crumbling under the intense scrutiny, Neale is thriving.

The 32-year-old is currently Brisbane’s No.1 ranked player for the 2026 season according to Champion Data and is averaging statistics rarely seen even during his peak Brownlow-winning years.

His disposal average has climbed back above 30 touches a game for the first time since 2019, while he is also recording career highs in centre clearances, inside 50s and marks.

He is also averaging his second-best score involvement numbers of his career as Brisbane continues its push for another premiership.

Neale delivered another reminder of his dominance in the Lions’ recent win over Carlton Football Club, finishing with 33 disposals, nine clearances and a goal in a performance that earned him the Robert Walls Medal.

The stunning form surge has come just months after his separation from Jules became public following allegations he had ‘betrayed’ her ‘in the most unimaginable way’.

The fallout quickly became one of the biggest off-field stories in the AFL.

Jules relocated back to Perth with the couple’s two children, while Neale stepped down as Brisbane co-captain ahead of the 2026 season amid relentless public attention and rumours surrounding the breakdown of the marriage.

But in an emotional radio interview in April, Neale admitted football had unexpectedly become an escape during the darkest period of his life.

‘I think in a way it was a form of therapy to just go and train and look after myself,’ he told Triple M’s The Rush Hour with Dobbo & Elliott.

‘I didn’t really drink at all or anything in that period, I felt like I really had to knuckle down and narrow my focus on my football and being there for my kids when I could.

‘In a weird way, it helped my football.’

Neale also admitted he felt he needed to prove himself again after the scandal exploded into public view.

‘I felt like I had let a lot of people down, so I wanted to redeem myself in a way, by the way I came back into the preseason and games, in particular,’ he said.

The veteran midfielder’s resurgence has only intensified interest in where he will play beyond this season.

His contract expires at the end of 2026, with strong interest reportedly coming from Western Australian clubs eager to lure him closer to his children in Perth.

Despite the speculation, Neale recently declared he would ‘do everything’ possible to remain at Brisbane.

‘(I’m) nowhere near making a decision yet, but what I do know is I love this football club,’ he said.

‘I’ll probably try to do everything I can to stay.’

The Lions would desperately want him to remain.

Even with a résumé already featuring two Brownlow Medals, two premierships and four All-Australian blazers, Neale may somehow be playing some of the most complete football of his career right now.

And in one of the AFL’s most remarkable twists this season, the scandal that many feared would derail him appears to have had the complete opposite effect.
