A clutch of England stars will have to be on their best behaviour should the Three Lions defeat Norway to book their spot in a World Cup semi-final.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are preparing for a meeting with Erling Haaland & Co in Miami on Saturday night, and should the team gain a substantial lead, a place in the final four to play either Argentina or Switzerland could yet beckon.

But due to a change in FIFA’s rules on player suspensions, some stars might be wary of their future involvement should England progress.

At this year’s tournament, players will see the yellow cards they receive wiped at two points: after the group stage, and after the quarter-finals.

Previously, there was only one card amnesty ahead of the semi-finals, which might have meant that Declan Rice – who picked up a yellow during England’s goalless draw with Ghana, and a second in their clash with Mexico – would not be available to face Norway.

Instead, Rice will be as wary as fellow team-mate Jude Bellingham, whose yellow card during England’s round-of-32 tie versus DR Congo means that, should England progress, his participation could be under threat if he picks up another booking.

Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Nico O’Reilly are among those on thin ice should England beat Norway

Nico O’Reilly is another star in a similar situation, as is his Manchester City team-mate Marc Guehi.

The former Crystal Palace defender was the recipient of a yellow card in the 68th minute against Mexico – which fans had erroneously thought was aimed in the direction of Harry Kane.

Rounding out the pack of players with one yellow card to their name is Jordan Henderson – although the Brentford midfielder is unlikely to constitute major suspension risk after sustaining a serious injury to his forearm in Mexico City.

The 36-year-old was caught up in England’s raucous celebrations, vaulting over an advertising hoarding before landing awkwardly.

All four of those who have already picked up a yellow card between the round-of-32 and the quarter-final are expected to start in Miami.
