Manchester City midfielder Rodri is waiting for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to give the green light for his proposed return to Spain.
City have already signed Elliot Anderson and are working on a deal for Lille midfield prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi, mindful that Rodri and his representatives have still to accept terms on the new contract they offered in April.
The 30-year-old, who has one year left on his City deal, is keen on a return to Madrid and there is growing support for the move on the back of him leading Spain to World Cup glory.
Perez was initially reluctant to back the transfer but others within the club have suggested it would be a good deal for the club and their image.
Jose Mourinho has been brought in to eradicate a perceived divisiveness in the Madrid dressing room and has already pushed for senior players to be recruited.
But the consequences could mean others departing.

Aurelien Tchouameni has agreed a new contract extension and wants to stay in Madrid but could find opportunities become limited. Likewise, as Daily Mail Sport reported, his France compatriot Eduardo Camavinga could also yet depart.
As a result, Premier League clubs are attentive to the situation.
Daily Mail Sport understands that while Manchester United have a long-held interest in Tchouameni, they have not made fresh enquiries since their initial contacts months ago and established that the 26-year-old would also be very expensive and difficult to place in their current wage structure.
Camavinga has been considered by City, Chelsea and Arsenal. Despite his experience, he is still only 23. He could represent greater value but key is whether either would leave Madrid.
Other players expected to go are Gonzalo Garcia who is wanted by Fulham and Franco Mastantuono who will be allowed out on loan. Raul Asencio will also go as they work to recoup funds for Rodri and one more showpiece signing.
