How you can share your views on potential UK measures responding to the new US tariffs
On 2 April 2025, the United States announced that it will impose an additional 10% tariff on top of existing US duties, fees and taxes on imports from the United Kingdom. This will come into effect on 5 April 2025.
These additional 10% tariffs do not apply to US imports of
- steel and aluminium articles and automobiles/automobile parts which are, or will be, subject to separate additional 25% tariffs
- copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber
- energy, energy products and other minerals not available in the US
Views of business and other stakeholders
Following the announcement of 10% reciprocal tariffs on the selected products announced, the UK government is seeking input on the anticipated impacts of potential UK tariffs on US goods, implemented as a response to recent US tariff measures.
The UK government is seeking input from UK companies on the form of any future UK response, through the following questions
- the average value of their US imports
- the impact of any possible UK tariffs
- how they would adjust to them.
The information gathered will help the government to assess the scope and impacts of any UK tariff measures that could be applied.
The government has released an ‘indicative long list’ of US products, which are most likely to be considered for UK tariffs in response to US measures, to assist businesses in evaluating potential impacts. This list covers about 27% of UK imports of US-origin goods, according to 2024 data.
The ‘indicative long list’ does not imply all items will be subject to future tariffs; it is a selection pool for potential tariffs. The list identifies products with limited impact on the UK, considering supply chain risks and public interest, including medical supplies and national security.
The government is seeking input from all stakeholders that could be affected by potential UK tariff measures, because they import or consume US products.
The request for input will close at 11.59pm on 1 May 2025.
Respond to this request for input.
