- Anthony Rubio took advantage of his first action in college football
The son of a United States Senator scored his first collegiate touchdown on Friday night, sending his teammates wild.
The Florida Gators easily handled the Tulane Green Wave in the Gasparilla Bowl, winning 33-8.
And Anthony Rubio – the son of Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio – saw action late in the game as he punched in a nine-yard touchdown.
Rubio’s teammates mobbed him in the end zone after the score, as Florida’s bench cleared and the team received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
It was the first time that the the walk-on redshirt freshman had played for the Gators, and he was understandably thrilled after the game.
‘It was insane. First I wanna thank God for that, wouldn’t have happened [without] him,’ Rubio said to reporter Jesse Simmons afterwards.

Sen. Rubio, recently picked to be Secretary of State, congratulated his son afterwards on X
‘But I’m so glad He did that. That was awesome, that was a great experience. Go Gators!’
His father also took to X to congratulate his son.
‘Happy my son scored,’ he began. ‘But what I am truly proud of is the joy from his teammates and that he gave all the glory to God.’
Anthony finished the game with six rushes for 32 yards and a score.
According to the Gators’ website, Rubio spurned scholarship offers from Buffalo, Bryant and Charlotte to join Florida as a preferred walk-on last year.
He did not see the field in 2023.
Sen. Rubio, meanwhile, has been tapped as the next US Secretary of State by incoming president Donald Trump.
