Real Madrid’s embattled boss Alvaro Arbeloa announces he is LEAVING and won’t work under Jose Mourinho – despite being one of the returning manager’s acolytes

Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed that he will exit the club amid Jose Mourinho’s imminent return.

Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January, is a supporter of Mourinho’s controversial re-appointment having played under him between 2010-13.

Confirming the news of his departure ahead of Madrid’s final game of the season against Athletic Bilbao this weekend, Arbeloa said: ‘It’s my last game this season; I don’t know if it’s the last of my life as Madrid’s coach – we never know. I’ll try to enjoy it.’

As for his own future, Arbeloa said: ‘Mourinho has a fantastic coaching staff; he’s surrounded by great people. If he comes, he’ll bring his own team, as he should. There’s no chance I’ll be joining him. 

‘I’ve spent the last four months thinking about Madrid; from now on, it’s time to think about myself. I’ve taken the leap, and I feel ready for new challenges.’

Club president Florentino Perez has been an admirer of the current Benfica manager since his first spell at the Bernabeu, and they have remained close in the years since. Mourinho’s contract is set to run until the summer of 2028, and will an include an option to extend by a further year.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, 63, steps into a crisis club after a season clouded by in-fighting between players, an early Champions League exit, and Barcelona steaming to the LaLiga title.

One of the most vocal objectors has been Casillas, who was dropped as No 1 goalkeeper by Mourinho during his first spell at Madrid. 

‘I have no problem with Mourinho,’ Casillas wrote on X last week. ‘I think he’s a great professional. I just don’t want him at Real Madrid.

‘I believe other coaches would be better suited to manage the club I love. That’s just my personal opinion. Nothing more’.
