Ch Insp Paul Doyle said violence was not “part of the job for police officers” and that it “will not be tolerated”.
“I would like to reassure the community that we are working to trace the person responsible and will continue to carry out inquiries in the local area,” he said.
“We are speaking to members of the public and there will be additional patrols in the area, and would encourage anyone with any information or concerns to speak to officers.”
He added that his thoughts were with the “officers, their families and colleagues” and that they would be given “all the necessary support.”
