Peruvian police found a creative way to ensnare a suspected drug trafficker – by dressing up as World Cup mascots.

Intelligence staff in the South American nation found out that their wanted man also happened to be a football fanatic.

Rather comically, that led to officers approaching the house of the potentially dangerous suspect dressed as Maple the Moose and Clutch the Bald Eagle.

And believe it or not, their strategy worked.

A police spokesman said: ‘Thanks to the intelligence work carried out by the team, we were able to establish that the person we were about to arrest was a die-hard football fan, living and breathing the World Cup fever.

‘So, we proceeded to disguise my Green Squad personnel as World Cup mascots, in order to approach him without arousing suspicion and make the arrest.’

Their ruse worked as they were able to detain the suspect after a short chase

The officers first broke through the gate to the property in the capital city of Lima.

Once inside the complex, they had to chase their target before catching him upstairs.

They found a gun, knife, and drugs in the house of the suspected offender, items which he might have a hard time explaining.

It is unclear why the chap did not think anything was unusual when he saw two gigantic World Cup mascots approaching his home outside one of the host nations.

Peru are not even in the tournament after finishing ninth out of 10 in the South American World Cup qualifying bracket.

Los Incas last qualified in 2018, when they finished third in a group featuring France, Denmark, and Australia.
