The Philadelphia Eagles have announced a pair of roster moves – adding one key piece and losing another to a serious injury.
The defending Super Bowl champions announced that they’d be adding pass rusher Za’Darius Smith to their roster on a one-year deal.
Smith spent his 2024 season split between two teams. He began with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Detroit Lions at the deadline.
Last season, the 32-year-old Smith totaled nine sacks for his two teams as well as 35 total tackles.
Smith was cut in March by the Lions and had not signed with a team in the preseason.
To make room for Smith on their roster, the Eagles announced they’d be placing fullback Ben VanSumeren on injured reserve.

This comes after the team put fullback Ben VanSumeren on IR after tearing his patella
VanSumeren was injured on the opening kickoff of the season on Thursday night and needed to be helped off the field.
After undergoing tests, the team revealed he had torn his patella and will be out for the rest of the season.
VanSumeren went undrafted in 2023 out of Michigan State but has spent his whole career with the Eagles – winning Super Bowl LIX last season.
