Phil Mickelson tears into Gavin Newsom over lawsuit against Donald Trump

Golfer Phil Mickelson tore into governor of California Gavin Newsom on X after he announced a lawsuit suing Donald Trump over electric cars.

Newsom announced the lawsuit against the President earlier this week, explaining to his social media followers: ‘California is filing a lawsuit against President Trump for withholding billions of dollars approved by Congress for electric vehicle infrastructure.

‘This is yet another Trump gift to China – ceding American innovation and killing thousands of jobs. We are not letting up.’

It sparked a withering response from LIV golfer Mickelson, who responded sarcastically to Newsom by saying: ‘Stay after it governor.

‘Show him what a great high speed railway system we have and I’m sure he’ll change his mind.’

Mickelson was referencing Newsom’s California high-speed rail project, estimated to cost around $130billion connecting the San Francisco Bay Area with Los Angeles.

Newsom said Trump's moves on electric vehicle infrastructure are 'a gift to China'

Newsom said Trump’s moves on electric vehicle infrastructure are ‘a gift to China’

The idea was first raised by Newsom’s predecessor, Jerry Brown, in 2008, when the estimated cost was around $30billion.

It has been a topic that Trump has repeatedly attacked Newsom on. Earlier this week, Trump said the ‘out of control’ cost of the project will ruin any aspirations Newsom has to run for president.

‘A little train going from San Francisco to Los Angeles that’s being run by Gavin Newscum, the governor of California. Ever heard of Gavin Newscum?’ Trump said in the Oval Office.

‘That train is the worst cost overrun thing I’ve ever seen. It’s hundreds of billions for a stupid project that should’ve never been built.’

The 54-year-old Mickelson went in again on Newsom when he announced the launch of the website ‘californiafacts.com’, which he said will ‘call out the misinformation machine that consistently spews lies about CA’.

Newsom added: ‘We’re done letting the trolls define the Golden State. We’re going on the offense and fighting back — with facts.’

Mickelson, who was born in San Diego, replied: ‘In golf, I have Phil’s Book of Rules.

‘It’s where I make the rules as I go and it’s great. I understand why you would do the same.’

Next week, Mickelson will compete in the US Open - the one Major that he as never won

Next week, Mickelson will compete in the US Open – the one Major that he as never won

As for golf, Mickelson is preparing for the US Open next week at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

It’s the one Major that has eluded him throughout his distinguished career, finishing second on no fewer than six occasions.

If he was to cause a shock and win the tournament this month, he’d follow Rory McIlroy in becoming the seventh player to record golf’s Grand Slam.
