Mohamed Salah spoke candidly of his former manager Jurgen Klopp as he outlined the German’s key differences compared to Arne Slot.

Salah played 349 games under Klopp at Liverpool, scored 211 goals, helped bring a league title back to Anfield for the first time in 30 years, and was pivotal to their Champions League success in 2019.

Under Slot, the Egyptian has scored 33 goals and provided 23 assists across all competitions this season, including 28 goals in the Premier League.

Salah’s performances helped the Dutch manager lead the Reds to their 20th English top-flight title in his debut season, levelling rivals Manchester United for the most ever.

After Klopp called time on his Liverpool tenure last season, many questioned how the club would survive in his absence.

But Salah has revealed just how easy it has been for them to bounce back, under the guidance of Slot.

The Egyptian explained that he and his team-mates fell into complacency towards the latter stages of Klopp’s reign.

He argued that Slot’s ‘direct’ approach helped bring ‘competition back into play’ at the club.

‘In preseason, Arne came to see me and asked me to be an example for the other players,’ Salah told L’Equipe.

‘I told him not to worry because I’m always at my best, not to set an example but because I’m like that.

‘He told me what he expected of me in the game, with a lot of responsibilities in the animation, I liked that.

‘Arne is very direct, he brought the competition back into play, whereas with Jurgen we were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end.

‘Arne and his staff are more open to discussion, to the exchange of feelings, I think that was important in my performances. And, above all, it led us to success.’

Salah went on to explain that winning the Premier League title in 2025 was a more satisfying feat than when they did so in 2020, despite the latter achievement ending Liverpool’s 30-year title drought.

He added; ‘I was telling Virgil that, without taking credit away from anyone, winning the league without Jurgen, ‘Bobby’, Sadio, ‘Hendo’ (Jordan Henderson) and all the 2020 teammates was even more special because we have a group of very good players, but most of them had never won before. It’s gratifying.’

Klopp took charge of 491 games at Liverpool, winning 299 of them – an impressive 61 per cent win rate.

The veteran manager won eight trophies with the Merseyside club – a Premier League title, a Champions League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, one FA Community Shield, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.

He called it quits at the end of last season after a historic nine-year spell at Anfield, and has been the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull since January.

Klopp is widely regarded as not only one of the greatest Liverpool managers of all-time, but one of the greatest in the Premier League era.
