Everton legend Peter Reid appeared to be in high spirits to say the least as he joined fellow club greats to say an emotional farewell to Goodison Park on Sunday.
The 1980s title-winning midfielder was interviewed live on TNT Sports from the pitch just after 11am ahead of Everton’s final men’s match at the famous old ground, a Premier League clash against Southampton.
Reid, who had attended a breakfast reception earlier in the day, admitted to having ‘a shandy’ before arriving, though his slurred delivery and flushed face hinted it may have been more than just the one.
‘Listen, it’s the best place in the world and the best people in the world,’ he said. ‘So, you know, you can’t beat it. I’m very emotional if I’m honest. Mind you, I have had a shandy.’
The 68-year-old was among a host of club icons returning to L4 for the occasion, alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson.
Reflecting on the day, Reid added: ‘This place, the history of the place and the camaraderie is brilliant, so I can’t express it if I’m honest. It’s just… it’s in the heart and they’re brilliant.’
Reid’s lively cameo came just days after he caused a stir with a foul-mouthed outburst during a pre-recorded segment on Sky Sports News’ Goodbye Goodison special.
While recalling James Tarkowski’s dramatic equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at the stadium, Reid blurted out: ‘Yes, but what about the f***ing three heart attacks I had in-between?!’
Although he quickly added, ‘I’m sorry about my French!’, the expletive made it to air and prompted an immediate on-screen apology from Sky: ‘We apologise for any bad language broadcast.’
Reid remains a beloved figure at Goodison Park thanks to his integral role in one of the club’s most successful eras.
He made 229 appearances for Everton between 1982 and 1989, helping them win two First Division titles, an FA Cup, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Renowned for his combative style and leadership in midfield, Reid was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1985 and earned 13 England caps during his time at the club, including an appearance at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
