The Major League Soccer team he owns are in crisis but Patrick Mahomes didn’t have a care in the world over the weekend as he spent some quality time with his family.
His wife Brittany shared a picture of him at Dancing On Ice with daughter Sterling and son Bronze on Monday, captioning the image of Bronze sat on his dad’s lap: ‘Dancing on Ice yesterday and Bronze had the best seat in the house.’
But if Sunday was his day of rest, Monday morning was back to business with the MLS team that Mahomes is a part-owner of, Sporting Kansas City, firing its longtime coach Peter Vermes.
Sporting KC have started the season with five losses and a draw in its first six games and with the team last in the Western Conference standings, they have fired Vermes from the job he has held since 2009.
The move from Mahomes and the ownership group comes after Sporting KC fan group ‘The Cauldron’ published an angry open letter calling for Vermes to go and saying ‘this team has stagnated, its ambitions dwindled and its results declined’.
Vermes’s last game was Saturday’s 2-1 loss to FC Dallas. But while Vermes has lost his job, those fans don’t believe it is solely his fault.

But at Sporting Kansas City – the MLS team he’s a part-owner of, fans wanted the coach fired
Peter Vermes was duly fired on Monday as head coach, a job he has held since 2009
Addressing Mahomes, who is part of the ownership alongside the Patterson Family, the Illig Family, Greg Maday, Pat Curran and Robb Heineman, the letter added: ‘To the ownership group. the responsibility to act falls on you.
‘You must decide whether Sporting KC remains content with being a relic of past success or whether it fights to become a dominant force once again.
‘The time for loyalty-based decisions has passed. We demand accountability. We demand ambition. We demand change.’
The message was clearly received. Upon confirming the departure of Vermes on Monday, the team announced that long-serving assistant Kerry Zavagnin will be interim manager.
It now remains to be seen if Mahomes’ pull in the sporting world can help convince an established name to take over his MLS team and steer it up the Western Conference standings.
Mahomes and wife Brittany are also part-owners of the Kansas City Current, the women’s soccer team.
Last season in MLS, Mahomes famously met Lionel Messi – widely regarded as the best soccer player ever – when Sporting KC hosted Inter Miami at Arrowhead Stadium.
Messi scored a stunning goal on the night at the home of the Kansas City Chiefs to lead Miami to a 3-2 victory.

Mahomes is in the NFL offseason at present but has been causing a stir with a series of workout videos he has shared across social media during his period of extended downtime.
It has led Chiefs fans to speculate if he is shedding the ‘dad bod’ he has joked about having – and has said is useful for a quarterback – after enduring Super Bowl humiliation in February.
The Chiefs were on the brink of an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ but were blown away by the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, losing 40-22.
