Niall Horan is reflecting on the loss of his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, in his new song, “End of an Era.”

“We had it, pure magic / Remember what it was like / Time passes so fast that / I couldn’t tell you goodbye,” sings Horan, 32, in the first verse of the song, which was released Friday.

He moves on to wistfully look back on their younger years as he sings about how “things change overnight.”

“Careless times, yeah, we sure had some / Naïve eyes, yeah, we sure looked young / Tears fall down like the future comes / Slowly, then all at once,” he sings.

“Feels like letting go of / Things we’re not supposed to / One breath and it’s over / The end of an era,” reads the lyrics of the chorus.

Payne died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after he fell from his third floor hotel room balcony at CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

At the time, Horan responded to the “heartbreaking” death of his friend, saying it “just doesn’t feel real,” in an Instagram statement.

“Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure,” Horan wrote.

“All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness. We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever. The bond and friendship we had doesn’t happen often in a lifetime.”

In his March GQ interview, the “Slow Hands” hitmaker revealed that his new single was inspired by the grief he felt after Payne’s death.

He also reflected on his final memory with Payne, who visited the singer just days before he suffered his tragic fall.

“It was great. [He] seemed in good form and we had a good laugh, good reminisce,” Horan said, adding that he learned of Payne’s death while watching TV in his bed at home.

“I just remember getting a message. And I was just like, ‘What?’… I just didn’t think it was real,” he said. “Someone so young, you’re not expecting to hear that they’ve passed, especially someone that you’ve just seen. I just went back from shock to sadness to anger.”
