A resurfaced interview with Fernando Mendoza has revealed why the star Indiana quarterback shunned love as he chased a shot at the NFL.
Mendoza is expected to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft after leading the Hoosiers to their first ever national championship.
The 22-year-old is a Heisman winner and one of the most popular characters in college sports. But he has remained single throughout his time at school.
Before joining Indiana for the 2025 season, Mendoza spent three years at Cal and during his time with the Golden Bears, he explained that he feared a girlfriend could derail his chances of reaching the very top.
‘I know myself and I know that (college) is such a short period of time that, if I have a really, really good next year or next two years, I can make it to the NFL and I believe I will make it to the NFL,’ he said.
‘However at this point I have to limit all distractions. I live a three-minute walk from the facility where we have our weight room, our practice facility and our stadium.

‘I think that’s very important living close – especially with the girls, it can be very distracting. You might find your first love in college.’
Mendoza continued: ‘I’m going to give everything my all – so if I have a girlfriend, I’m going to give her my all and that means I’m going to go back from 6pm to 9pm and hang out with her and maybe get dinner or something. Rather than picking up dinner on the way back from class and watching extra film for the game week.’
The quarterback led Indiana to a 27-21 victory over Miami in this week’s national championship game – with Tom Brady among those watching on from the stands.
Brady is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the first overall pick in the draft and are set to select Mendoza.
Earlier this week, reports emerged that the Raiders are expected to hire an offensive-minded head coach to pair with the quarterback.
Las Vegas is on the lookout for a new coach after Pete Carroll was fired, with Brady and general manager John Spytek in charge of the appointment.
The reported frontrunners for the Raiders job are offensive minds Klint Kubiak and Davis Webb. Kubiak serves as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, while Webb is the Broncos’ offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
