Newcastle United overcame the odds with 10 men as they beat Manchester United 2-1 on Wednesday night at St James’ Park.
William Osula’s stunning stoppage-time strike sparked pandemonium among the home support and ended Michael Carrick’s unbeaten tenure in charge of the Red Devils.
Daily Mail Sport’s CRAIG HOPE and CHRIS WHEELER were at the Premier League encounter to run the rule over the players.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3)
Aaron Ramsdale 8.5
Huge call by Eddie Howe to restore Southampton loanee and drop Nick Pope, and Ramsdale responded with flying save from Kobbie Mainoo at 0-0 and then from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee at 1-1. Enough to suggest he deserves a run in side now. MOM.
Aaron Ramsdale was man-of-the-match for Newcastle as they beat Manchester United 2-1
Kieran Trippier 8
Found Matheus Cunha a tricky opponent early on but recovered and used experience to shut down threat. Provided clever touchline ball to set Osula free for winner. Rolled back the years here. Key interventions in box late on, too.
Malick Thiaw 7
Back to better form after sticky run and was there to head, kick and intercept when needed. Benjamin Sesko was barely given a sniff under his attention.
Dan Burn 8
Became key to home resistance as legs tired after the hour, exemplified by one sliding challenge to upend attacker followed by hearty roar towards home fans. Won a big goalmouth header soon after. A man mountain.
Lewis Hall 7.5
In the battle of would-be England left backs versus Luke Shaw, Lewis Hall came out on top. Showed class going forward with dribbles and composure but will be disappointed in part for Man United equaliser, conceding free-kick and then losing scorer Casemiro.
Jacob Ramsey 6.5
Desperately unlucky to be sent off for second yellow when ‘diving’ in area. He fell after going beyond Senne Lammens and absence of appeal told you no dive. Was bright in his 46 minutes before red.
Sandro Tonali 7.5
Ran himself into the ground, quite literally when retiring with cramp in the 97th minute. Was a huge reason why it never looked like 10 vs 11 – he played the role of two men at times.

Sandro Tonali (left) ran himself into the ground with a brilliant display in midfield for Newcastle
Joelinton 7.5
Set the tone with aggressive bursts forward and played with power and intent throughout. Was fortunate, however, not to be sent off when sarcastically applauding his booking. Never tired.
Anthony Elanga 6.5
Two first-half crosses sailing beyond all in area showed need for more in terms of end product, but he was a nuisance and always came back for more. An improved display.
Anthony Gordon 7.5
Won and scored penalty to give Newcastle deserved lead and it was deserved for Gordon, too. His work-rate and front-foot energy unsettled Man United and his touches opened up several openings. More proof he is club’s best bet at striker right now.
Anthony Gordon won and scored the penalty to give Newcastle the lead in the first half
Harvey Barnes 6
Should have scored when presented with chance in trademark area 20 yards out at 0-0. His shot wide captured final execution of 12 games without a goal. Sacrificed at break for extra midfielder.
Substitutes
Joe Willock (on for Barnes 46) 6.5
Jacob Murphy (on for Elanga 85) 6
William Osula (on for Gordon 85) 8
Sven Botman (on for Tonali 90+7) 6
Manager: Eddie Howe 8
Got decision to drop Pope right and his team responded to disappointment of defeat by Everton to perform with ambition and adventure. A big night for the head coach and crowd sang his name throughout.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)
Senne Lammens 6
A little static for Osula’s late winner, but couldn’t be blamed for either goal after Gordon fired Newcastle ahead from the spot. Did well not to bring down Ramsey in the red-card incident.
Noussair Mazraoui 6
Came into the line-up for his first start since early December, replacing Diogo Dalot in United’s only change. Held his own at right-back against Gordon, and was then booked for challenge on Elanga when he switched to left-back. Went off injured late on.
Leny Yoro 5.5
A little hesitant again when Trippier clipped the post with an early cross but settled after that. Went close to his first Premier League goal in the second half, heading straight at Ramsdale from close-range.
Leny Yoro (centre) came close to scoring his first Manchester United goal with this header
Harry Maguire 6.5
Played despite news of his guilty verdict in Greece earlier in the day after recovering from the illness that forced him off against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Looked totally unfazed, and won every header, but was used by Osula to leave Lammens unsighted for the winner.
Luke Shaw 6
Also passed fit after coming off against Palace due to illness. Up against Elanga’s pace down the left and, strangely, Burn’s height at set-pieces but coped well before coming off just after the hour mark.
Kobbie Mainoo 5
A solid if unspectacular performance from the young midfielder up against Tonali and Joelinton. Had a decent effort from 20 yards saved by Ramsdale just before half-time.
Casemiro 5.5
Started the game sporting a black eye from the Palace game, but didn’t hesitate to stick his head in to meet Fernandes’ cross and equalise before half-time. Another headed goal from another assist by his captain.
Bryan Mbeumo 5
Looked a little off his game again. Made some silly challenges and was booked early on. Had a clear chance in front of goal in the first half but blazed over.
Bryan Mbeumo looked a little off his game and blazed a good chance over in the first half
Bruno Fernandes 7
Wasn’t fazed at all by conceding the penalty for a foul on Gordon. Having teed up the equaliser for Casemiro, he produced some exquisite passes to create chances for Mbeumo, Yoro, Ugarte and Cunha in the second half.
Matheus Cunha 5
Blew hot and cold again, which won’t silence the debate over his suitability for the wide left role in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Had one effort well saved by Ramsdale and made some promising runs.
Benjamin Sesko 4
Came into the match with seven goals in eight games and looked eager to continue that run, but never really came close aside from a half chance early on.
Benjamin Sesko (centre) was quiet up front for Manchester United as Newcastle kept him quiet
Substitutes
Diogo Dalot (on for Shaw 61) 6
Tyrell Malacia (for Mazraoui 85)
Manuel Ugarte (for Casemiro 61) 6.5
Amad Diallo (for Mbeumo 76) 5
Joshua Zirkzee (for Mainoo 77) 5
Manager: Michael Carrick 5
He has transformed United during his short time in charge, but this has been coming in recent games and they didn’t do nearly enough to beat Newcastle’s 10 men after another red card decision went their way.
