The New York Mets have fired manager Carlos Mendoza.

The Mets are 34-47 this season and already at serious risk of missing the playoffs.

Billionaire owner Steve Cohen is spending a half billion dollars in player salary and luxury taxes this year, which is more than any team besides the Los Angeles Dodgers.

LA is the two-time defending World Series champions and this season the Dodgers are currently the best team in baseball at 52-29, whereas the Mets are 15 games out of first in the NL East and 9.5 games back in the wildcard standings.

In a statement, Cohen said: ‘I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment. He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout and I wish him and his family all the best.

‘Our commitment to bring our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.’

New York has also been outscored by 47 runs this year, while the Dodgers have outpaced opponents by 144 runs.

Andy Green has been named interim manager after previously working with the club as the Senior Vice President for Player Development.

Green played briefly with the Mets in 2009 and later managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019, accumulating a 274-366 record without ever finishing above fourth place in the National League West.

A former Yankees assistant coach, Mendoza replaced Buck Showalter after the 2023 season and led the Mets to a 206-199 record.

While New York advanced to the NL Championship Series in 2024, the Mets failed to reach the playoffs last year and are among the sport’s biggest disappointments this season.

‘Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,’ president of baseball operations David Stearns said in a statement.

‘Carlos´ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.’
