  • 40% of young people wish they had learnt the basics about tax when they were younger.
  • HMRC is encouraging young people to use the HMRC app to manage their money and tax.
  • 90% satisfaction rating from young people using the app.

Four in ten of Generation Z say they wish they had learnt the basics about tax when they were younger as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging those looking for work this summer to download the HMRC app to find the answers they need.

As exams are finishing and young people are starting their summer job search, the HMRC app can help them understand their tax affairs and money matters.

Last year, an average of 3.4 million 18-24 year olds worked during their summer break.

Young jobseekers have access to all the job-related details they need in the HMRC app to simplify and speed up the process when starting a new seasonal job, including their National Insurance number, tax code, employment history and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) details.  They can also check their pay in the app before it lands in their bank, to make budgeting that little bit easier. And it has a 90% satisfaction rate among their young peers already using the app.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer said

Downloading the HMRC app gives young people an advantage in understanding their tax affairs with instant access to information that can help demystify money matters.

Young people looking for their first job may not even be aware of what tax information they need. Having the HMRC app to hand will make it a lot easier.

More than 627,000 young people aged 16-25 used the HMRC app for the first time last financial year and more than 1.2 million people have saved their National Insurance number to their digital wallet since the service launched in 2023.

Gen Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2012 and the HMRC survey into customers’ digital habits also found that, of those aged 18 to 24 who had used the app

  • 33% used it for job-related information including checking their tax code, employment history and income
  • 26% used it to save their National Insurance number to their digital wallet
  • 20% of young people are most likely to use it when starting a new job or changing jobs

HMRC’s Tax Confident website provides clear, simple resources to help people understand the money basics including information about tax and paying tax on your income.

HMRC is also reminding young people starting a new job to check their pay regularly to ensure they’re getting paid what they’re entitled to receive under National Minimum Wage requirements. If they have any concerns they are not getting the correct pay, they can contact HMRC or ACAS to make a complaint.

Further Information

Recent survey, carried out between 27 February and 12 March 2026, on behalf of HMRC, into the digital habits of 5,206 consumers.

Monthly employment by age can be found in the Labour Market Statistics. The 3.4 million monthly average relates to 18-24 year olds who worked between June and September 2025.

Online reviews for the HMRC app is currently 4.8 stars on the App Store, and 4.6 stars on Google Play.
