The Meole Brace Footbridge in Shrewsbury is to be removed and taken away for refurbishment – with a temporary footbridge put in place while work is carried out,
The bridge crosses the Rea Brook between Meole Brace roundabout and The Brooklands pub.
The refurbishment work will include repainting the structure, installing new timber decking, and constructing terraced concrete steps on the downstream left embankment to provide safer access for inspectors.
The work will see the bridge colour changed from its current green to Shrewsbury Town’s blue and amber.
The bridge is being lifted out and refurbished offsite to ensure a high-quality finish and reduce overall costs.
To facilitate the bridge lifts, the B4380 Hereford Road and Roman Road will be closed overnight from 8pm to 6am on 24/25 May, and on 21/22 June 2025.
To facilitate pedestrian access during the removal of the footbridge a lane closure will be in place between the following dates:
- 19 to 23 May (8pm to 6am)
- 23 to 26 May, and 20 to 23 June (24-hours)
During the closures a signed diversion route will be in place as per map below (including a signed pedestrian diversion route). Depending on vehicle type road users may be able to choose an alternative diversion route.
Access will be provided to properties and businesses within the closure when safe to do so.
All planned roadworks are subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be displayed on the yellow advanced warning signs and on the One Network roadworks website.
