Manchester United’s third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford, the club have announced.

Heaton, 40, has only made three appearances since returning to his boyhood club in the summer of 2021 – and last played for United in February 2023 – but he is part of the leadership group of players and a key figure in the dressing-room.

Although United are likely to be in the market for a new back-up keeper for Senne Lammens if Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana leave this summer, Heaton was expected to be retained on a new 12-month deal after playing an important role in helping Lammens settle at United during his first season.

It means that Heaton will go into his 21st season as a professional player, having made his debut in 2005 for Swindon Town on loan from United during his first spell at the club.

‘It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,’ he said. ‘You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success.

‘I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.’

Heaton started out in United’s academy and returned five years ago having spent a number of years playing in the Premier League for Aston Villa and Burnley, as well as winning one England cap a decade ago.

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox said: ‘We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.

‘Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.’

Current No.2 Bayindir could return to Turkey with Besiktas after United rejected an offer from the Istanbul club in the January transfer window, while Onana has been told that he has no future at Old Trafford after being replaced by Lammens. The Cameroon international spent this season on loan at Trabzonspor who want to keep him.

While United have let Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia leave as free agents this summer, they were keen to hang onto Heaton. Last month, Casemiro explained why the veteran keeper is so influential despite the lack of playing time.

‘He is very important for us,’ said the Brazil star. ‘He pushes the training and he pushes in the game. Of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy. He helps the room so much.’
