Manchester City are closing in on finally appointing Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor.

Executives at City have been in lengthy dialogue with their Chelsea counterparts for weeks over the terms of an agreement that allows them to unveil the Italian.

A compensation package expected to be worth in excess of £10million is what Chelsea look set to secure for a manager who resigned at Stamford Bridge at the turn of the year.

Maresca has been in discussions with City’s director of football for some time and is well across the club’s plans for the summer transfer window.

Elliot Anderson is the primary target in midfield and there is a positivity that the England international will complete a switch to the Etihad Stadium for a British record fee of more than £120m.

City are also targeting a right back and a winger, while they admire Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.

Maresca will take the reins at City with Guardiola’s blessing. The pair are close, with Maresca having spent a year as the Catalan’s assistant when City completed the Treble in 2023.

The majority of the squad are in North America at the World Cup and many will not head out to a pre-season tour of Asia.

City and Chelsea declined to comment.
