Hugo Ekitike went from hero to zero last night for Liverpool as his matchwinning moment against Southampton saw him sent off in the process.
Ekitike scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute as his side squeezed past the Saints 2-1 at Anfield in the Carabao Cup third round.
After brilliant work by Federico Chiesa to set him up to score, Ekitike proceeded to take his shirt off and show his surname to the jubilant Anfield crowd.
However, the Frenchman forgot one thing… he had already been booked and was subsequently shown a second yellow card and was sent off.
He has since taken to social media to apologise for his ‘stupid’ actions, with the striker now banned for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.
In light of his red card, Daily Mail Sport look at other regretful celebrations…

Steve Morrow (Arsenal)
Let’s begin with the one of most painful outcome of all the celebrations on this list – a badly broken arm.
This unfortunate fate befell Morrow after he scored the matchwinner in a comeback with for Arsenal to win the 1993 League Cup final.
This happened on-the-pitch but after full-time, so slightly different to others on this list, but it had to be included all the same.
As players and staff celebrated on the pitch, Morrow was hoisted high in the air by Tony Adams.
However, the iconic Gunners centre-back accidentally dropped him on the Wembley turf resulting in a badly broken arm. In fact it was so damage that it almost severed the nerve but thankfully Morrow made a full recovery.
Reflecting on that incident he told The Guardian in 2020: ‘My special memory of the day is of scoring the goal. It still gives me goosebumps.’
But Morrow didn’t hold back on the regret of missing out on the post-match party and basking in the glory – even if Adams did turn up at his bedside with a crate of champagne.
‘I guess the notoriety you get from an incident like that has its upsides. I don’t have any regrets about it. Tony and I still joke about it when we see each other.’

Lomano LuaLua (Portsmouth)
When you think of LuaLua you automatically think of his trademark acrobatic goalscoring celebration and it was this that caused him an issue in one match.
The game in question? Portsmouth’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League on April 12, 2006.
LuaLua scored Pompey’s equaliser at Fratton Park with a bullet header – sparking pandemonium on the south coast.
And as he wheeled away in joy, LuaLua performed his summersault but with a hiccup – tweaking his ankle during the landing.
It wasn’t obvious at first due to the adrenaline but after that had worn off a minute later, LuaLua signalled to be substituted as he sat on the turf and unable to move.
Speaking on the moment, he said: ‘I felt a twinge in my ankle when I landed after the header and probably should not have done the flip,’ he said. ‘But I was carried away with the emotion of scoring against Arsenal.’
Meanwhile, then-Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp remarked: ‘He still did his triple somersault with pike without realising he’d hurt himself. He’s a one-off.’
The irony too was that LuaLua had promised to only do his celebration if Portsmouth got out of the relegation zone. His equaliser was unable to do that as they stayed there on goal difference. However, they did avoid the drop that season.

Ian Harte (Leeds United)
There have been many a knee-slide celebration fail over the years, but this one stands out for the aftermath of that.
In Leeds United’s lofty days at the turn of the millennium, they were a consistent European outfit – with the peak coming in 2000-01 when they reached the Champions League semi-finals.
En route to the final four they faced Deportivo La Coruna in the quarter-finals – cruising to a famous 3-0 first-leg win at Elland Road.
Harte opened the scoring on the 25th minute with a thunderous free-kick and promptly raced to a corner flag to celebrate.
The left back initially performed a knee-slide cleanly but as he got up to roar to the crowd he tripped over the corner flag and stumbled.

Paulo Diogo (Servette)
If Morrow’s celebration is fail is the most painful, then this one is certainly the most gruesome.
Thankfully there is no footage or pictures of this but it involves Diogo losing a finger…
The unfortunate incident came when Diogo was playing for Swiss side Servette in away game at FC Schaffhausen.
Having provided an 87th-minute assist for Jean Beausejour to score, the midfielder jumped up on the metal perimeter fence separating the fans from the pitch.
However, he didn’t realise his wedding ring was caught on the barrier and as he jumped down… well, yes, you guessed it – his finger tore off along with the ring.
To add insult to injury, no pun intended, Diogo was booked for his celebrations as it was deemed as ‘time wasting’ by the referee.
After a failed attempt to reattach the finger in a Zurich hospital, he was advised by doctors to have the remaining part of his finger amputated at the first joint.

Joel (Coritiba)
If the aforementioned celebration was gruesome, this one makes you wince for different reasons.
It’s not uncommon for stadia in South America to have stands far from the pitch and that theme applies here in Cortiba, Brazil.
Their Estadio Major Antonio Couto Pereira sees both stands behind the goal distanced from the pitch, a fact their forward Joel found out about in 2014.
Leading 2-1 with just a few minutes to go against Sao Paolo, the then-20-year-old settled the contest with a strike in the 86th minute. Free of the last defender, he confidently rounded the goalkeeper with a cheeky step-over before firing home from close range.
In 2014, Cortiba forward Joel fell down a hole in the pitch after looking to celebrate with fans
Eager to bask in the adulation and share the moment with the fans, the forward leapt spectacularly over the advertising boards… only to disappear from sight.
As it turned out, Joel’s jump saw him tumble down a rather unfortunately placed stairwell that had been covered by some flags.
Ouch.
Security staff rushed to the forward’s aid and after a brief delay, the forward re-emerged with an understandably stunned expression. Despite the fall, Joel was able to complete the match and perhaps most importantly, finished his celebration safely within the confines of the pitch.
