The new and final season of The Comeback, starring Lisa Kudrow, is receiving mixed reviews after landing on NOW, Sky Go, and HBO Max in the UK.
The Telegraph has given the series, about washed-up sitcom actor Valerie Cherish trying to recapture her glory days, four stars, saying the format is “perhaps a little over-familiar, but the sharp satire still bites”.
The Guardian awarded it two stars, dubbing the satire “toothless” and labelling the majority of Cherish’s interactions “exercises in trite sentimentality”.
The Times gave the show three stars, saying the laughs were “waning” by the halfway point.
The New York Times, meanwhile, said the series “misses the heart” that it previously got from Cherish’s friendship with her stylist, and its “efforts to replace the dynamic fall short”.
