Leicester City RELEGATED to League One – 10 years after winning the Premier League

Leicester City have had back-to-back relegations confirmed — with the Foxes dropping into League One just a decade on from being crowned Premier League champions.

Gary Rowett’s side had needed an unlikely set of results to preserve their Championship status, having headed into the game eight points from safety with just three to play.

And play-off chasing Hull sealed the Foxes’ fate at the King Power Stadium. Leicester were trailing 1-0 at the break to a Liam Millar goal but they had hope when Jordan James’s 52nd-minute penalty was followed two minutes later by a Luke Thomas strike.

A first victory in eight games would have taken their survival bid into the final two matches of the season, but Ollie McBurnie’s 15th league goal of the campaign drew the sides level and they were unable to find a winner.

Leicester had begun the season among the favourites for promotion following their relegation from the Premier League last year.

Marti Cifuentes, who was appointed as manager in the summer, was sacked in January with the Foxes lying 14th in the Championship table and six points off the play-offs.

Andy King oversaw four defeats during an interim spell in charge before Rowett was appointed in February.

Leicester won just one of their 11 matches since as the club fell into the relegation zone, before being cut adrift in the fight to avoid the drop.

The Foxes hopes of avoiding relegation had been dented earlier this month after the club saw an appeal against a six-point deduction rejected.

The penalty was imposed in February by an independent commission. They were charged by the Premier League in May 2025 for breaches relating to the 2023-24 season, when they were in the Championship.

Fans have expressed their frustration at the club’s ownership and players amid a dismal campaign that has seen a third relegation in four seasons.

Midfielder Harry Winks, who reportedly earns £90,000-a-week, was seen clashing with fans as he made his way onto the team coach following a 1-0 weekend defeat by Portsmouth that left Leicester facing the drop.

Leicester’s fall into the third tier for just the second time in the club’s history comes a decade on from their shock Premier League title win.

On the eve of the match with Hull, Leicester announced it would mark the 10-year anniversary of their title win with a charity match to raise funds through the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, whose late father Vichai oversaw their title win, issued a statement apologising to fans for relegation to League One.

‘To our fans, Relegation to League One is now confirmed. As Chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses,’ the statement read.

‘We have experienced the highest highs and now the lowest lows, and the pain is shared by all of us. I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused.

‘I understand the strength of feeling among our supporters, and we do not take your support for granted, especially at moments like this. Our focus now is on what comes next.

‘We will take the necessary decisions to move the Club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City.

‘Our objective is clear – to respond strongly and compete to move this Club forward again. We will face this head-on. We will keep going. Together. Top.’
