Lessons in Lifestyle

Buckingham Palace is advertising for a videographer to help the Royal family produce on-trend content for social media.

The full-time role pays £52,000 and entails the staff member working on everything from major state events to behind-the-scene moments.

It marks the first time that a videographer has been hired by a British monarch.

According to reports in The Times, King Charles is said to be “very enthusiastic” about the position.

In an advertisement, set to close on 12 July, the Palace asks that the ideal candidate take a “social-first approach to storytelling, working on end-to-end video and photography production to produce high-quality content for platforms including Instagram, X and YouTube.”

It adds: “From major state events to behind-the-scenes moments, you’ll ensure every piece of content is engaging, creative and impactful.”

The successful applicant will use a range of equipment from high-end cameras to phones, applying their “instinct for what works to create on trend content that reaches new audiences”.

They will also “keep up to date with trends and continually evolve content to maximise reach and engagement.”

The King and Queen already employ the services of an official cameraman, Duncan Stone, who distributes the footage to British broadcasters.

The new role will be part of the royal communications team in the private secretary’s office and has been advertised on the official Palace website.

The Royal family, historically private and reclusive, have become increasingly experimental and public with their private lives in recent years.

Prince William and Princess Kate already employ the services of a videographer to produce a variety of candid and professional clips for their social media platforms. They have shared everything from footage and images of official royal visits to intimate family moments and personal announcements.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have also engaged increasingly with social media, sharing a personal message to the US following a state visit to meet President Donald Trump in May this year.

“We leave a piece of our (heart emoji) behind and take a little of yours back home with us,” they wrote. “Until the next time… God Bless America.”

The annual King’s Speech is also broadcast on social media channels. He has warned against becoming a “shouty” culture in the digital sphere, saying in a speech in 2023: “There is in our land a kind of muscle memory that it does not have to be like this.

“That the temptation to turn ourselves into a shouty, recriminating society must be resisted, or at least heavily mitigated whenever possible. Especially in the digital sphere where civilised debate too often gives way to rancour and acrimony.”
