Katy Perry’s bizarre 2026 Met Gala look has drawn humorous comparisons to everything under the sun — from astronauts and robots to fencers and even AI-generated imagery.
The pop star, 41, made her way up New York City’s iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art staircase Monday night in a white strapless Stella McCartney gown, matching opera gloves and a white mesh and silver, mirrored mask. The end of the dress’s train was singed.
As the “California Gurls” singer stopped and posed for photos, she opened the mask to reveal her face.
Perry’s daring outfit was a take on this year’s dress code: “Fashion is Art,” which encouraged guests to think about how they can use their bodies as a blank canvas.
Her look ignited debate about how exactly it connected to the theme, with some fans simply calling it “astro-chic,” and others suggesting it was a commentary on the dangers of AI to art.

“Katy Perry just touched down at the 2026 #MetGala2026 serving astro-chic realness in a celestial mask and an all-white moment that’s giving ‘moon goddess but make it fashion,’” one person wrote on X.
“Who wore it better Katy Perry or Optimus,” a second quipped, referencing Tesla’s Optimus robot.
“Katy Perry pretending to be an astronaut again at Met Gala 2026,” a third joked, as a fourth echoed: “Katy Perry at the Met Gala, reminding everyone that she’s been to space.”
Others, meanwhile, praised her look as being a successful interpretation of the theme.
“Katy Perry is the only one so far who actually brought a concept and an idea. Very few others have really tried to adapt to the theme,” one person argued. “I don’t care..for hours we were wondering whether what we were seeing online was real or AI, and that’s exactly what she wanted to achieve.”

“Katy Perry is mocking AI in her Met Gala dress by dressing up that resembles an AI Robot — and its ability to generate art in seconds is a true art form killer. HER MIND,” a second wrote.
Perry’s headpiece was designed by Miodrag Guberinic to be “a literal and symbolic reflection that invites the observer to consider that their perception of others can mirror their own internal world, and conversely mask truth,” according to a press release shared with People.
This year’s event, dubbed The Bezos Met Gala by protestors, has faced a wave of backlash following the announcement that the Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, would be the lead sponsors. Condé Nast and Saint Laurent are serving as secondary sponsors. The role is understood to give the couple influence over everything from invites to the overall presentation of the event.
A group of guerrilla activists has urged people to boycott the 2026 Met Gala, with several signs popping up near the Metropolitan Museum in New York City that read: “Bezos Met Gala: Brought to you by the firm that powers ICE” and “Boycott the Bezos Met Gala.”
The sponsorship by the tech mogul — who recently spent millions on a movie by First Lady Melania Trump via his Amazon MGM film studios — sparked backlash from critics who accused Bezos of buying influence at the prestigious fashion ball.
