Josh Allen has seemingly welcomed the Buffalo Bills’ decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott, with the star quarterback admitting ‘change is needed’.
McDermott was axed back in January after nine seasons in charge following the Bills’ heartbreaking 33-30 playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.
He was quickly replaced by Joe Brady, who had served as the team’s offensive coordinator and in various other roles under McDermott since 2022.
Allen is one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks and was named MVP in 2024. But his career is threatening to bypass him without the Super Bowl victory his talent deserves.
The Brady era begins when the Bills report for training camp on July 29 at St. John Fisher University in Rochester.
And, in an interview with People, Allen appears to be pleased McDermott’s reign was ended and is looking forward to a bright future in the Bills’ new stadium.

NFL superstar Allen and wife Hailee Steinfeld announced the birth of their baby back in April
He said: ‘We’ve obviously got a new head coach, and so to have those memories being made in a new spot – and I think change is needed sometimes.
‘Especially when we’ve been close in the past, even going back to 20-ish, 30-ish years ago, just how close the Bills have been to winning a Super Bowl – I think this is kind of a switch that was necessary and I’m very excited.’
The Bills’ first regular-season game in their new stadium will be against the Detroit Lions on September 17 and will kick off Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Thursday Night Football’ schedule. They open the season on the road against the Houston Texans.
It has been a busy offseason for Allen after he and his wife, Hailee Steinfeld, welcomed their daughter, Harper, back in April.
The actress and singer, 29, made the announcement in a post to her Substack, titled ‘Special Delivery’. She wrote: ‘Our baby girl has arrived!!
‘We’re feeling incredibly grateful and blessed and savouring these early moments. Thank you so much for the love and well wishes.’
Allen and the ‘Sinners’ actress got married in May 2025 and revealed they were expecting a baby back in December with a video of Allen kissing Steinfeld’s stomach.
In a January press conference, Allen also said that being a father will be ‘the most important thing I’ll ever be’.
‘It’s something that I will take with great pride. And we’re going to have to figure things out on the go, just like anything else,’ he said.
‘But this is the most important thing I’ll ever be in my life, being a dad.
‘I know I love being a football player, and I love being a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. But I’m looking forward to this one.’
