A Japanese sightseeing train has relaunched for the summer, with tickets starting at 8,670 yen (£39).
The West Express Ginga train, operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) typically runs on three routes. In the summer, it shuttles passengers between Kyoto and Shingu on both daytime and overnight services.
The train runs throughout the mountainous Wakayama Prefecture, famous for its forest pilgrimage trails, sacred temple towns and coastal hot spring resorts.
As part of the experience, the sightseeing train makes extended stops at stations with short excursions available to book at an extra price. There will be chances to sample ramen near Wakayama station, opportunities to view the Hashigui-iwa rocks near Kushimoto station or try sushi at Kaina station.
Passengers can also choose upper-class tickets, which feature private compartments with seats that can be adjusted into beds, as well as access to a private lounge if booked in carriage number one. Upper class “green car” tickets cost from 11,450 yen (£53).
Family compartments can also be booked, providing a large bench seat that can be extended into a mattress for up to four passengers.
Other tickets will provide passengers with reclining seats or compartments containing two bunk beds.
Carriages also contain washrooms, free spaces with other types of seating and wheelchair accessible seating and toilets.
The West Express Ginga also has a section of reclining seats for female use only, as well as a women’s changing room.
The first train of the season launched on 3 July, but will continue to operate until 30 September.
The Kyoto/Osaka to Shingu overnight express train will run on Mondays and Fridays, while the Shingu to Osaka/Kyoto daytime express train will run on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Regular tickets on the route cost from 8,470 yen (£39) if bought online, or 8,670 yen (£40) if bought at the station. Tickets go on sale at 10am one month prior to each operating day.
