Instagram and Facebook have gone down in a major outage.

The apps refused to work as expected. On Instagram, for instance, new pictures failed to load and profiles were not showing as usual.

The issues did not appear to be affecting the whole of the apps, however. Some parts of Instagram did loads as expected, for instance, but would then show an error message.

The issues began around 5pm eastern time, or 10pm in the UK, according to tracking website Down Detector. It showed a sudden surge in error reports at that time, with problems reported right across the world.
