‘I would LOVE to keep West Ham in the league’: Everton boss David Moyes admits he has extra motivation ahead of huge clash with Tottenham in final-day relegation battle

David Moyes says he would love to help his old team West Ham out this weekend by beating their relegation rivals Tottenham.

Everton have a fine away record this season and have flourished in the capital in recent years. And a win in north London would give a huge help to the Hammers, though Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would also need to beat Leeds to pull off a great escape.

Moyes said: ‘I would love to keep West Ham in the league if I can.

‘But it’s more important that I get Everton a top-half finish and we try to get a few more million pounds because of our league place which is so important.

‘Sometimes when you’re in this position, you don’t look at your league position until you’re five or six years on and you look back.’

Moyes, meanwhile, has called on owners The Friedkin Group to back the Toffees in the summer market after they have enjoyed — at least — a mid-table finish. It is an achievement after years of relegation battles but there is a tinge of regret after a potential European push fell flat in the final month of the campaign.

He added: ‘I believe that’s what we need to do, as a football club we need to show it. The ownership, I want them to come out and show that. To show that, “Hey, we’re here, we’re going again we’re supporting”.

‘I know that Everton fans have had too many bad days. This showed a little bit of brightness and ray of sunshine in the season, we have to go and build on that. We have to keep progressing and not think that we have done enough. Every press conference i have been saying “go on, let’s make Europe”.

‘I have confidence that they will back us to get the next piece of the jigsaw. We are not a club to go and spend 200-300million, we don’t have that. We need to dodge and weave and hopefully make the right choices.’

Left back Vitalii Mykolenko is close to signing a new contract.
