The Socceroos have taken the world by storm in recent days – but how well do the nation actually know them.

Australia defeated Turkey in its first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with millions of fans tuning in across the nation.

Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe confirmed their household-name status overnight – but the notoriety of other players has since been questioned.

The Daily Mail has now put those residing in Australia to the test to see how well they know the team – with the results being shocking.

An A3 image with four headshots of random people, alongside four Socceroos squad members, has been shown to several people.

Despite being known as one of Australia's biggest stars, Christian Volpato (pictured) wasn't recognised by many people

They were given the challenge of picking out the four Aussie players – who were Lucas Herrington, Christian Volpato, Kai Trewin and Tete Yengi.

Every person interviewed could only guess who the squad members were, rather than being able to recognise one or two straight away.

‘I watched the game on the weekend, but could only guess from looking at this [image],’ one said.

‘I have no idea [which are Socceroos] at all, but I’ll give it a try,’ another claimed.

‘I have zero clue,’ one more admitted.

Their comments have come just days after 4.78 million Australians tuned in to SBS’ coverage of the Socceroos match against Turkey.

Despite the incredible number, the national football team struggles for recognition outside of when the FIFA World Cup is taking place.

Less than 25,000 fans packed out venues to watch the Socceroos face both Cameroon and Curacao in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup this year.
