Staff from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) have been recognised for their achievements with an award in the King’s Birthday Honours and commendations by the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS).

Nicholas Goddard, a principal scientist specialising in underwater systems, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Nicolas works on current and future generation submarines and is heavily involved with international research and development.

Nicholas said

It is a great delight, honour and indeed surprise to be considered for this award. I would to thank all those who have made this possible throughout my career.

The VCDS commended Nick Barrett and another Dstl employee for their contributions to Defence. Nick uses the knowledge, skills and experience he gained from the myriad roles and operational deployments over a 30 year Defence science career to provide technical leadership, mentoring and oversight to Dstl staff currently deployed on and supporting operations.

The Dstl BRAKESTOP team gained a VCDS team award for their contribution to the UK’s first ground‑launched cruise missile trial in over three decades. This landmark achievement has accelerated understanding and significantly advanced national Defence capability. The Dstl team have demonstrated an exemplary blend of technical mastery, collaboration and innovation while responding to operational urgency.

The Dstl Chemical Analysis and Attribution Team & Sense Analysis and Attribution Team was also recognised by the VCDS for their critical support to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Additionally, the Cyber & Specialist Operations Command, Deputy Commander (3*) Team Commendation has been awarded to the Dstl Chemical Biological and Radiological (CBR) Programme team who play a pivotal role in delivering the training and expertise required to support Defence’s Counter-CBRN capabilities.

Dstl Chief Executive, Dr Paul Hollinshead, said

Science and technology has a crucial role in the keeping the UK safe and I am immensely proud of our colleagues who have made – and continue to make – a real impact for Defence.

All are worthy recipients of the King’s Birthday Honours and VCDS Awards and demonstrate the depth and breadth of expertise Dstl provides to our armed forces.
