A 37-year-old visitor from California died Tuesday after losing consciousness on a hazardous section of the Kalalau Trail in Kauai, Hawaii, local authorities said.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on May 19 on a steep, exposed cliffside section of the trail known as “Crawler’s Ledge.”

Bystanders administered CPR on the trail until emergency crews arrived by helicopter, according to a statement issued by the Kauai Police Department Wednesday.

Kauai Fire Department crews used a helicopter to lift the man from the ledge and paramedics continued resuscitation efforts as they rushed him to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man’s identity has not been released. Police said an autopsy is pending to determine his cause of death, though foul play is not suspected.

Crews from the Kauai Police Department, American Medical Response and several Kauai Fire Department units — including the Hanalei Fire Station, Rescue 3 and Air 1 — responded to the scene.

“The Kaua‘i Police Department extends its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the department said in a statement.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or helped administer CPR to contact authorities.

The 11-mile Kalalau Trail is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous hiking routes in Hawaii due to its steep elevation changes, narrow cliffside paths and slippery terrain. The specific section where the man collapsed earned its nickname because the steep, narrow slopes force some hikers to crawl across it, SFGate reported.

Fatalities on the trail are rare, though warning signs posted along its streams tally roughly 100 deaths over the years, and rescues are common. According to data reported by SFGate, local emergency services conducted 73 documented rescues on the trail in 2024 and more than 69 rescues in 2025.
