Rick Astley has said his most surreal experience of Never Gonna Give You Up was hearing the 1987 hit played back to him by a Tokyo toilet.
The singer told Radio Manchester he was surrounded by photos of himself as his songs were played back-to-back in the Japanese bar owned by some friends of his.
He said: “You go in the loo and all it does is play Rick Astley songs.
“So I’ve sat in a Japanese toilet listening to myself while looking at pictures of myself on the toilet walls.”
The singer was responding to a listener’s question about the most bizarre place he had ever heard his biggest hit, Never Gonna Give You Up, released 38 years ago.
It was later used in Rickrolling, an internet prank where people are tricked into clicking on a hyperlink that leads to the song’s music video.
Astley explained he had visited a bar run by Danish friends who own a beer company a few years back when he discovered the Rick Astley-themed toilets.
He also spoke about his memories of growing up in Newton-le-Willows and the early days of his career.
