Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with Manchester United to keep him at Old Trafford for another year.

The 33-year-old’s deal includes the option of a further season so he could remain at the club until 2028, taking him to nine years as a United player.

Maguire, who cost United £80m when he joined from Leicester in 2019, said it was “the ultimate honour” to play for them while director of football Jason Wilcox praised him for his determination and resilience.

Maguire’s previous contract was due to expire in the summer and United risked losing him on a free transfer but he has been a pivotal player since Michael Carrick took over, earning an England recall.

Maguire said: “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

Maguire, who has scored 17 goals in 266 appearances for United, has responded after losing the captaincy under former manager Erik ten Hag and has been ever-present during Michael Carrick’s time in charge.

And Wilcox added: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.

“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire will miss United’s next match, against Leeds on Monday, as he is suspended after being sent off in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth while he also faces an FA charge for his words or behaviour to the fourth official after his dismissal.

United are also in talks with Kobbie Mainoo about a new deal and are confident the midfielder will agree to extend his stay.
