Harry Maguire has been charged by the Football Association for his reaction following his red card in Man United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

The Man United defender was sent off after being adjudged to have pulled back Evanilson in the penalty area in their Premier League clash last month.

Maguire had contested his dismissal with referee Stuart Atwell and fourth official Matt Donohue after VAR had ratified the decision.

Junior Kroupi equalised from the resulting penalty, as Bournemouth fought back to earn a point against Michael Carrick’s side.

‘Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Manchester United FC’s Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 20 March,’ an FA statement read.

‘It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.

‘Harry Maguire has until Thursday 2 April to provide a response.’

Maguire is currently set to serve a one-match ban for his dismissal, with the 33-year-old set to miss Man United’s clash with Leeds at Old Trafford on April 13.

Should Maguire’s ban be extended as a result of the charge, he would likely miss the Red Devils’ trip to Chelsea on April 18.

The match could prove a key one in the battle for Champions League qualification, with third placed Man United currently seven points clear of Chelsea, who lie sixth.

Daily Mail Sport revealed last month that Man United had made a formal complaint to PGMOL following the draw at Bournemouth.

Man United officials were left furious after they were controversially denied a second penalty when Amad Diallo appeared to be wrestled to the ground in the box when they were leading 1-0.

Bournemouth levelled through Ryan Christie from the resulting passage of play. A subsequent VAR check then failed to overturn what may well have been a two-goal swing.

The view within United is that Maguire’s foul for Bournemouth’s second equaliser was similar to that committed by Adrien Truffert on Diallo, which went unpunished.
