Guglielmo Vicario has revealed details of the emotional pre-match video that proves to be the inspiration behind Tottenham’s Europa League triumph.
After the routine team meeting at the team hotel in Bilbao, boss Ange Postecoglou showed his players a series of clips from their friends and family wishing them well and backing them to take the final step by beating Manchester United to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy.
‘It was very emotional,’ said Vicario, whose mother and father spoke in his video. ‘They said just to fight for this badge, to fight for Tottenham Hotspur and to make them happy.
‘In the back of our minds they played a big part of the game and they were out there celebrating with me on the pitch.’
Tottenham won 1-0 courtesy of a scruffy goal by Brennan Johnson.
‘The most important thing is we won,’ said Vicario. ‘It’s a big achievement for the club, for the fans. An important night, an historic night for everyone that loves this football club so I’m very happy.

‘A victory like this starts to change something in the back of the mind about a lot of people that maybe they didn’t give credit to us in some situations this season.
‘It’s been a tough season but now we won a trophy, we make history, we will play in the Champions League next season.’
Spurs are languishing 17th in the Premier League but qualify automatically for the Champions League next season, taking the total number of English clubs in the competition to six.
‘Yeah it’s massive,’ said Vicario. ‘It will be a very exciting season. Of course to get in Europe is where this football club has to be. We take pride from this achievement, it’s a huge one. And now we have to celebrate and we will focus on the next weeks.’
On the future of Postecoglou, who still appears likely to leave Tottenham after two years despite this success, the Italian goalkeeper chose his words carefully.
‘We just need to celebrate and don’t look too forward,’ said Vicario. ‘The only thing we can control is the present and what we achieved, so let’s celebrate and don’t look too much forward.
‘Of course he’s my gaffer, he’s the person who decided to bring me to this football club.
‘I just have to be very thankful to him for how much he believed since day one.
Vicario expressed his gratitude to Postecoglou but was carefully worded on his future
‘I’m very happy for him, for what we achieved altogether. It was a brilliant night and he deserved this a lot. He drove us brilliantly this season. It’s a big credit to him.
‘He said to us many times since the beginning, also last season that this group was going to change something, going to change the history of this football club and we did it, so credit to him.
‘He was the first to start to believe in something special and we did it, it’s unbelievable.’
