Background information
The Government Chemist Conference will take place on 23-24 June 2026 at the Nexus, University of Leeds, as an in-person event.
The global food system faces increasing pressures from climate change, population growth and the need to ensure long‑term food security. Addressing these challenges requires innovation across the food system, alongside proportionate, evidence‑based and adaptable regulation.
The conference will bring together professionals from across science, industry and policy to explore how measurement science can support a modern and responsive regulatory food system.
Julian Braybrook, Government Chemist will host the conference. The conference will feature keynote lectures by Professor Ian Young, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Food Standards Agency, and Dr Justine Betja, Deputy Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The conference will cover four themes focused on regulation, innovation, food production and environments

Day 2 will also feature a networking session focused on engineering biology for food and will be hosted by the EngBioMet network.
Remote attendance will be possible for those that cannot attend in person.
